Common questions

How do I get started on iPhone?

Murmur for iPhone is in a preview on Apple’s TestFlight. Ask for an invite with the Contact us form below. Once you have it, install Apple’s TestFlight app, install Murmur from it, and open Murmur — Pip walks you through the rest: allow the microphone, add the Murmur keyboard, and turn on Allow Full Access.

In the meantime, you can use Murmur in Safari: open Murmur, then Share → Add to Home Screen.

Why does the iPhone keyboard need “Allow Full Access”?

iPhone keyboards aren’t allowed to use the microphone. So when you tap the Murmur keyboard to talk, the Murmur app does the listening, and Full Access is what lets the keyboard and the app share your words, your Dictionary and your settings. It also lets the keyboard’s tone buttons and voice edits reach Murmur.

It isn’t used to log your keystrokes or read your clipboard, and nothing you type is sent — except the text a voice edit or tone button changes, when you use one. To turn it on: Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Murmur → Allow Full Access. What the keyboard does with your text

How do I set up the Mac app?

Download Murmur for Mac (Apple silicon), open the download and drag Murmur to Applications. The first time you open it, if your Mac says it can’t check the app, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway (on older versions of macOS, right-click the app and choose Open).

Pip then walks you through two permissions: the Microphone, to hear you, and Accessibility, to type your words into other apps and for hold-to-talk. If macOS asks for Input Monitoring, allow that too — it’s how Murmur notices its shortcut. Then hold Fn and talk, in any app. If typing stops working after an update, open Murmur’s Settings → “Set up this Mac again”.

Windows says it “protected my PC”. Is that OK?

Yes. The Windows app is a brand-new preview, so Windows’ SmartScreen doesn’t recognize it yet. Click More info, then Run anyway. It works on Windows 10 and 11.

Then hold Ctrl+Win and talk, in any app (or press Ctrl+Shift+M to start and again to finish). The Windows app doesn’t show your words live while you talk yet — they appear when you finish.

Can I use it without installing anything?

Yes — open Murmur in your browser, allow the microphone, and tap the mic. It works in Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox (Firefox doesn’t show words live while you talk).

How do I get updates?

iPhone (TestFlight): open the TestFlight app and tap Update next to Murmur. To get new builds on their own, open Murmur in TestFlight and turn on Automatic Updates.

Mac, Windows and web: most improvements reach you automatically — the apps load the latest Murmur and refresh themselves when a new version is out. When the app itself changes, download it again from the Download page and install it over the old one.

What happens to what I say?

There’s no account. Your history, Dictionary and notes stay on your device — and so does your last recording, for up to 24 hours, so you can recover that dictation if something goes wrong (each new dictation replaces it; “Delete it now” deletes it). To turn your voice into polished text, your recording and words go to our AI providers with zero data retention — they’re not kept, by us or by them, and never used to train AI. No ads, no tracking. How do I delete my data?

Almost everything is on your device: Settings → Clear all local data, or delete the app. Your last recording: “Delete it now”, beside “Recover last dictation”. Voice samples (only if you turned them on): Settings → “Delete all my samples”. To delete a suggestion or message you sent us, ask with the form below.

How do I get my words onto a new device?

There are no accounts, so each device keeps its own name, Dictionary and settings — but you can move them in a minute. On the device you already use, open Settings → Move my words to another device → Send from this device, choose what to bring, and you’ll get a 12-character code (and a QR code). On the new device, open Settings → Bring my words from another device (or, the first time, “I already use Murmur — skip setup”) and type the code. (A phone’s camera can scan the QR code to bring them into Murmur in that phone’s browser; for the iPhone app, type the code in the app.)

Your words are encrypted before they leave, Murmur can’t read them, and they’re deleted as soon as they’re opened. A code works once, for 10 minutes. Nothing already on the new device is removed — new words are added. How it’s kept private
